The question of “will AI replace a doctor?” is too big. Within the doctor's work, dozens of different tasks: documentation, diagnosis, physical procedures, talking to the patient, responsibility for the decision. They are automated at different speeds.
A doctor is a profession as a set of tasks
- documentation – high potential of automation;
- Search for information – AI greatly accelerates;
- Physical procedure is another class of task.
- Conversation and responsibility are a high human component.
Teacher
Ten exercises are easy to automate. Understanding why a particular child systematically avoids a task, choosing a pedagogical strategy, and building trust is another job.
Developer
Boilerplate and some tests are getting cheaper. But understanding requirements, architecture, debugging, security and responsibility for integration remain a significant part of the role.
Lawyer and manager
Search, drafts and resumes are speeding up. Negotiations, conflicts of interest, strategy and decision-making with incomplete information are much more difficult to automate.
Matrix of automation
| Sign of task | Automation is easier | Automation is harder |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatability | Tall. | Low. |
| Digital entry/exit | Yes. | The physical world |
| Criteria | Clear. | Uncertain. |
| Liability | Low cost of error | The high cost of error |
| Trust. | Not required | central |
How to Audit Your Own Profession
- Write down last week's 10 tasks.
- Mark repeats.
- Note the ones that require human judgment.
- Divide into "automate/accelerate/leave to human/unclear."
- Choose a skill that adds value to the remaining human tasks.
What to strengthen now
- ability to set AI tasks;
- verification of the result;
- industry expertise;
- complex problem solving;
- communication and negotiation;
- Responsibility for the final result.
Don’t look for a list of permanent jobs.
