Imagine a dispute between three teachers. The first one says, "Grammar first." Second: "There is nothing to say without words." Three: "Just talk." Each has a point, but no single component is enough on its own.

Grammar argument

Grammar creates structure: who did the action, when, under what conditions. But you can do the tests perfectly and not be able to tell what happened yesterday.

Dictionary argument

Without vocabulary, there is nothing to gather a thought from. But thousands of passive words do not guarantee that the right thing will appear in a conversation.

Argument by speaking

Practice creates automation. But if a person repeats the same mistake for months without feedback, the conversation reinforces not only the good.

ComponentWhat givesWhat happens without him?
GrammarLinks and accuracyThought easily becomes ambiguous
VocabularyContentsNothing to express.
SpeakingSpeed and automatismKnowledge remains passive.

Diagnosis of weak link

  • You know the words, but sentences break down more target grammar.
  • The structure is normal, but speech is monotonous → active vocabulary.
  • Tests are good, in conversation stupor → speaking.
  • Speak quickly, but you are misunderstood → add pronunciation.

The four-week experiment

  1. Record an unprepared conversation.
  2. Find one major problem.
  3. Give her about half the target practice for two weeks.
  4. Use the new in live speech.
  5. Record a similar conversation again.

How to change proportions by level

SituationTemporarily reinforce
A beginner knows few designs.Base + simple speech
A2 stuck in patternsSpeaking + chunks
B1 speaks fluently but inaccuratelyTargeted Grammar + Feedback
B2 wants professional speechAccurate vocabulary + complex argumentation

What not to do

  • divide the week equally just for the sake of a beautiful scheme;
  • Continue to train what is already working well.
  • Learn grammar without your own examples.
  • Learn vocabulary without context.
  • Replace speaking with passive viewing.

The best component is not the one that is declared to be the main one on the Internet, but the one that now limits your next step.
