Imagine two students. The first one learns thousands of words, but in conversation he is constantly looking for the right thing. The second knows less, but quickly uses familiar expressions and is able to explain the unknown in other words. Which one is more fluent?

Why there is no magic number

There is no number of words after which the brain automatically switches to fluent. Free speech depends simultaneously on vocabulary, grammar, speed of extraction, pronunciation and conversation experience.

Why chunks are stronger than single words

Instead of one.decisionteachmake a decision, difficult decision, change your decision. The brain receives ready-made building blocks that are easier to use under the pressure of conversation.

  • Learn the verb along with typical additions.
  • Remember short expressions;
  • Mark the prepositions.
  • Keep real offers available;
  • Avoid large lists without context.

How to check an active dictionary without a test

  1. Set the timer for two minutes.
  2. Tell me about yesterday.
  3. Mark the places where the word was missing.
  4. Repeat on the topic of work, travel and interests.
  5. Make a personalized list of recurring gaps.

Create a dictionary of your own life

A person who works as a doctor and travels needs some words; a designer with international clients needs others. Priority vocabulary should reflect the situations in which you want to act.

ZoneWhat to add
Me and family.Biography, relationships, household events
Work.Processes, projects, people, results
Everyday lifeShopping, transportation, health, home
InterestsThe topics you are really talking about
Language purposeExam, move, study, career

What to do if the right word is not available

Do not automatically switch to Russian. Explain:

receipt → the paper they give you after you pay

landlord → the person who owns the apartment I rent

Paraphrasing is one of the central skills of fluent speech.

How a word becomes active

  1. Meet in context.
  2. Understand the meaning.
  3. Create your own example.
  4. Remember later without a hint.
  5. Use it in a real message or conversation.

So instead of asking, “How many words do I know?” it’s more useful to consider situations in which you can act. Language freedom is not a number in an app, but a growing range of thoughts you can express.
