You read an English phrase and understand it immediately. Listen to the teacher, the meaning is clear. Ask someone a simple question, and the familiar words seem to disappear. This does not mean that you are not capable of languages. Chances are, you’ve been training for a long time, and you’ve barely trained to extract language from memory.

Active English test

Read:I decided to stay at home because the weather was terrible.Now close the sentence and say in English, “I decided not to go out because it was very cold outside.”

If the first is easy and the second is noticeably more difficult, the problem is not understanding – activation.

What does the brain do?How it feels.What to train
Recognize"I know that word when I see it."Reproduction without prompting
Understanding"I understand someone else's phrase."Independent phrases
Automation."The phrase appears quickly."Many short repetitions in speech

Reason 1: The dictionary remains passive

Reading cards alone is not enough. A new word should appear several times in your own speech.

  • Make a question.
  • Answer him;
  • Come up with a mini-story.
  • return to the word in a few days;
  • Use it in a live conversation.

Reason 2 - each sentence is first built in Russian

The chain “thought → ideal Russian sentence → translation → grammar check → speech” is too long. Allow yourself to express a complex thought with a few simple English sentences.

I wanted to come earlier. But I forgot my documents at home. So I had to go back.

Reason 3: Rules have not yet become a skill

Knowing the Past Simple formula and using it in an unprepared story are different skills. Automation comes from applying, not just reading, a rule.

Reason 4: The internal editor is too strict

Divide the practice into two modes.

  1. Accuracy:Speak slowly, correct errors, analyze form.
  2. Fluency:The task is not to stop; mistakes are solved after a conversation.

14-day speaking reset

Days.The challenge
1–2Answers in 20-30 seconds
3–4Comment on your actions
5–6Retell short videos
7–8Explain unknown words without a dictionary
9–10Telling stories
11–12Arguing an opinion
13–14Live unprepared conversation

What counts as progress

  • You start the answer faster.
  • The pauses are shortening;
  • An unknown word stops the conversation completely.
  • Some of the designs appear without translation;
  • You can talk about the same topic longer.

Conversational freedom doesn’t begin on the day you learn “enough English” but when knowledge is quickly retrieved from memory. It is a separate skill and can be trained.
