Don’t force yourself to “stop thinking in Russian forever.” The realistic goal is to gradually shorten the path between thought and English phrase. To do this, we will conduct a seven-day experiment.
Day 1 – Calling the World Directly
Look around and name objects without speaking Russian. Then add properties:a heavy bag, an empty glass, a narrow street.
Day 2 - Commentator of everyday life
Describe actions several times a day:
- I'm making coffee.
- I need to answer this message.
- I'm looking for my keys.
- I don't want to be late.
Day 3 – Let us allow ourselves simple thoughts
If a complex Russian sentence does not yet fit into English, break it into two or three simple ones. This is not a “poor language” but a strategy of fluency.
Day 4 - Five minutes without a dictionary
You don't know the word? Explain it:
kettle → a thing you use to boil water
charger → a thing I use when my phone has no battery
| The old reaction | New reaction |
|---|---|
| I don't know the word. | In other words. |
| Build the perfect Russian phrase | Formulate the available English version |
| Checking every rule. | Makes sense first. |
Day 5 - Internal Radio
Think for five minutes in plain English about plans, shopping, work, or yesterday. If the thought becomes difficult, simplify, and do not switch immediately to Russian.
Day 6: Automatic reactions
- Prepare five unexpected questions.
- Give yourself a maximum of three seconds to start the answer.
- Do not correct yourself in the first attempt.
- After the answer, write down one improved version.
Day 7 - Ten minutes without emergency exit
Have a conversation where you can not switch to Russian because of one unknown word. Write down only those gaps that really bothered you.
What needs to change
- familiar designs appear faster;
- Simple thoughts no longer require a Russian draft.
- paraphrasing becomes more familiar;
- The pauses are shortening;
- You're less afraid to say things temporarily.
Plan after experiment
| If there's a problem | What to do in the next 2 weeks |
|---|---|
| Lack of words | Teach themed chunks |
| It takes a long time to build phrases. | Daily Short Monologues |
| Fear of error | Separate fluency sessions |
| I don't understand the interlocutor. | Enhance listening at the appropriate level |
English thought begins to come first not by order. This happens when the construction becomes so familiar that the brain no longer needs intermediate translation.
